I not really well practiced at drawing voluptuous women. In fact, my strategy to make a character not look male was to make her as lithe as possible, add eye lashes and a couple extra lumps, etc.

So, I'm kind of hacking at this figure tonight. I think I'm heading in the right direction, but there's definitely something to be had. This sketch has several more detailed layers, but I exempted them as they aren't quite developed yet.mlhopehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06145494715084950428noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4634682008351567067.post-85055813067669832102011-06-27T23:32:00.000-07:002011-06-27T23:32:32.397-07:00Robots, spacechaps, #doodles

I haven't rendered out an image for a while now. There are a couple back burner pieces and pages that I'm itching to get onto paper. I get really amped thinking about possibilities of a finished piece: compositions, palettes, contrast hierarchies. But sometimes you just gotta doodle: loosen up, make room for new ideas, and just have fun.

Really: few tasks are as fun and challenging as combining mediums. While the marriage between illustration and written word may seem glaringly perpetual, sustaining a complimentary dialogue between the two is nevertheless difficult.

I've managed to cobble together spur-of-the-moment methods to juxtaposing textual and illustrated narratives when having drafted comics in the past. However, I don't think I've found a method that I could confidently use again. However, I think that in this picture book collaboration with writer Shane Hosea we're managing to devise a useful drafting routine. So far, it's worked best for Shane to shoot me a written draft which I would interpret into thumbnails.

The idea is that Shane will then write his second draft while using the new visual elements to eliminate any superfluous text from the first draft - and when the second draft comes my way, I will similarly tighten up my compositions. What I find useful in this method is that the collaborative process is a dialogue rather than a dictation. Neither narrative elements are being bent around the other disproportionately. While smacking of fairness, this isn't solely a tool by which we're evening the work's authorship; rather, it optimizes the communication of the holistic narrative's ideas so that neither narrative element is being wasted.

With that said, we are only two steps through the dance. Plenty of time to step on a toe or two - or worse, prove myself wrong.

And I do hate proving myself wrong.
mlhopehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06145494715084950428noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4634682008351567067.post-77278347280388245012011-06-13T22:21:00.000-07:002011-06-13T22:21:32.213-07:00morel botto #sketches slash #doodles

Final printed size will be 33" x 17", segmented into 3 panels. Oh, and none of the principle subjects in this image -- it's a lot crazier than some landscape. Mostly posting this as a personal point of reference, especially for style development.
The volumes and articulation of the full body sketch are kind of jacked, but I think I'm pretty happy with the overall shape design. Going to be referencing those ancient French cave paintings for the overall mood and aesthetic of the book - so black and white, or sepia, loose shape based figures, not a lot of dynamic depth perception in the shots, etc.

Met up with some Portland drawing folk tonight for "illustration club." Really a super fun experience getting together several other artists with different styles and takes on the industry. Everyone was hospitable and talented; definitely a breath of fresh air after my long slump in - well, everything.

I've been working on this character design for Cappuccino all day. Still not quite nailed down, but it's getting there. Used a reference for her pose on the motorcycle; but the initial sketch of the bike was a generic single-cylinder cafe racer sketched from memory.. I think I used a Honda CL160 cafe racer for some finishing details.

Sketches of the colonel's right hand men. Pretty happy with em! Working on really simplifying the shapes -- but it's tough to visualize the perceived depth once some lines are omitted from the design!

No time! More about this later.

EDIT:
Weird idea after the break:

Okay. So. I live across from a public school where there is a ginormous American and Washington flag on display. When the wind blows, you can hear the hoisting cable clanging against the flag pole, a pretty distinct sound.

Well, today, I was walking Cyrus and I thought I heard the same sound elsewhere... where there was NO FLAG. Long story short, my imagination took me to this thought: what if there were predatory creatures that lurked our neighborhoods, and were evolutionarily adapted to their suburban habitats?

So I got this idea for a creature design series of these types of creatures. The flag monster is like.. a carnivorous chameleon glider that disguises itself as flags and stalks its prey from the perch of flag poles and such. Movement design will include billowing and draping like a hung flag.mlhopehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06145494715084950428noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4634682008351567067.post-12206990616632712332011-03-23T05:48:00.000-07:002011-03-23T20:51:02.298-07:00Morning shape study, #animal #illustration

Yikes, animals.
