Voluptuous

I not really well practiced at drawing voluptuous women. In fact, my strategy to make a character not look male was to make her as lithe as possible, add eye lashes and a couple extra lumps, etc.

So, I'm kind of hacking at this figure tonight. I think I'm heading in the right direction, but there's definitely something to be had. This sketch has several more detailed layers, but I exempted them as they aren't quite developed yet.

Robots, spacechaps, #doodles

I haven't rendered out an image for a while now. There are a couple back burner pieces and pages that I'm itching to get onto paper. I get really amped thinking about possibilities of a finished piece: compositions, palettes, contrast hierarchies. But sometimes you just gotta doodle: loosen up, make room for new ideas, and just have fun.

Still sorting out some settings in Sketchbook 2011. Good news is, my full retail copy of the software arrived today -- time to put it to work and get my money's worth!

Process: picture books and collaboration (#illustration)

Really: few tasks are as fun and challenging as combining mediums. While the marriage between illustration and written word may seem glaringly perpetual, sustaining a complimentary dialogue between the two is nevertheless difficult.

I've managed to cobble together spur-of-the-moment methods to juxtaposing textual and illustrated narratives when having drafted comics in the past. However, I don't think I've found a method that I could confidently use again. However, I think that in this picture book collaboration with writer Shane Hosea we're managing to devise a useful drafting routine. So far, it's worked best for Shane to shoot me a written draft which I would interpret into thumbnails.

The idea is that Shane will then write his second draft while using the new visual elements to eliminate any superfluous text from the first draft - and when the second draft comes my way, I will similarly tighten up my compositions. What I find useful in this method is that the collaborative process is a dialogue rather than a dictation. Neither narrative elements are being bent around the other disproportionately. While smacking of fairness, this isn't solely a tool by which we're evening the work's authorship; rather, it optimizes the communication of the holistic narrative's ideas so that neither narrative element is being wasted.

With that said, we are only two steps through the dance. Plenty of time to step on a toe or two - or worse, prove myself wrong.

And I do hate proving myself wrong.

Long time no post!

Been lost in the cubicle wilderness for some time, with nothing but ballpoint BiCs and Post-Its to scribble on.Things'll be changing soon, but until then..

Planning planning planning

This is the color and lighting key for my next illustration. Final printed size will be 33" x 17", segmented into 3 panels. Oh, and none of the principle subjects in this image -- it's a lot crazier than some landscape. Mostly posting this as a personal point of reference, especially for style development.

Let me know what you think!

UNIVERSE MACHINE: More redesign sketches!

As I push in a different stylistic direction, I felt it would be useful to do a few redesign sketches of old characters, despite there being little opportunity to work on Universe Machine any time soon.

Spaceguy Jekyll and Hyde character designs

Sort of an assignment, not really sure. Construction sketches for a futurisitc/space-themed Jekyll and Hyde!

Spring/Summer 2011 Promo Postcard!

Around "done," minus typography and hue adjustments (the R25's monitor is overly warm).
It's a Mailer Daemon. Get it? Hyuck!

Martok character sketches

I think I've settled on a mini-comic concept, a kind of goofy comedy/fantasy story about Martok, the barbarian. The volumes and articulation of the full body sketch are kind of jacked, but I think I'm pretty happy with the overall shape design. Going to be referencing those ancient French cave paintings for the overall mood and aesthetic of the book - so black and white, or sepia, loose shape based figures, not a lot of dynamic depth perception in the shots, etc.

It's a stylistic choice and not a cop-out excuse to get lazy, I swear!

Character design assignment, rendered

I feel like it's a little over-rendered, and I didn't get to experiment with paint textures as much as I would've liked, just because I wanted to get this done to make way for other projects. Still, pretty fun, and I'm satisfied with the result.

Who is this scummy dude? #characterdesign #sketch #cartoon

Short term illustration project for this week. Super rough character designs based on written description. I won't post the actual verbiage because I'm pretty sure it's licensed content, so YOU tell ME : what, when and where this guy is.

I wanted to do some more variations tonight (and a little more Motorcade work), but I got some reading to get done before I pass out.

"Motorcade," Victoria Capella gesture sketches

Only three so far, but I feel like the exercise really helped me nail down her shapes.

Style test doodle for "Motorcade"

A style test doodle for "Motorcade." Monochromatic palettes with lighting accents? Not sure how to approach this. Will revisit it later today.

Me vs Paper: #sketchbook snapshots - semi #NSFW

My tablet PC has really spoiled me over the past couple years. I live by the mantra of "Ctrl+Alt+Z", and it definitely has made my relationship with analog art a much rockier one than before. I did pick up this awesome 50% black brush pen that's been great for putting down some clean shadows - so, a little stoked about that.

In any case, here's some sketches I've laid down in my caveman tome. I'm focusing on an illustration series / possible mini comic that I'm calling Motorcade, right now. Combines sassy ladies, motorcycles and Rush references into a hideous little package.

Without further adieu (not entirely safe for work; some anatomy foundation drawings, crotches and nipples):

Beauts n Bikes, "Cappuccino" sketch, and a night at Illustration Club

Cappuccino, a character design for my next illustration series, Beauts 'n Bikes. Or something like that.
Not sure where I'll take with this.

Met up with some Portland drawing folk tonight for "illustration club." Really a super fun experience getting together several other artists with different styles and takes on the industry. Everyone was hospitable and talented; definitely a breath of fresh air after my long slump in - well, everything.

I've been working on this character design for Cappuccino all day. Still not quite nailed down, but it's getting there. Used a reference for her pose on the motorcycle; but the initial sketch of the bike was a generic single-cylinder cafe racer sketched from memory.. I think I used a Honda CL160 cafe racer for some finishing details.

I have this strong urge to really simplify the forms in my ultimate quest to develop my distinct style. I'll take another pass over this one tomorrow and see where it takes me. :]

Los Hermanos Robo, Fuego Rapido & Fuerte Gigante luchador #redesign #sketch

Sketches of the colonel's right hand men. Pretty happy with em! Working on really simplifying the shapes -- but it's tough to visualize the perceived depth once some lines are omitted from the design!

Thinking of some gaudy print for these guys's suits in order to steer the concepts away from the source materials.

Stables drawing session, this time #NSFW

This was more like an hour study than a 90 minute one. (I deviated to drawing a hand after I got bored with this pose)

Drawing is behind the break, due to NSFW status. :|

Quick morning sketch, flag monster #creaturedesign

No time! More about this later.

EDIT:
Weird idea after the break:
